Our practice follows a structured process to ensure that test results are managed safely, efficiently, and by the most appropriate clinician. The following information explains what patients can expect when contacting us about their laboratory results.
How We Manage Your Test Results
- The clinician who requested your test is normally responsible for reviewing and filing your results. It is your responsibility as the patient to follow up on results. We recommend downloading the NHS APP or call after 12.
- If a result is urgent, a clinician will contact you directly.
- If a result is not urgent, the clinician will record clear guidance in your notes about whether any follow-up is required.
Contacting the Practice for Results
- Patients are advised to telephone the practice for their results, unless they have been specifically told that the practice will contact them.
- Please do not be alarmed if you are asked to call back for further discussion; this does not necessarily mean there is a serious problem.
Follow-Up Appointments
- If a follow-up is needed, you will usually be booked with the clinician who originally requested the test, this is to ensure continuity of your care.
- In some cases, this may mean waiting several days for the next available appointment, which is safe and appropriate unless you have been told otherwise.
Medication-Related Queries
- Questions about medication or prescriptions may be directed to our Clinical Pharmacist or Medicines Support Team, who are best placed to advise in these situations.
Who Handles Your Results
- Test results, imaging reports, and referral responses are returned to the clinician who ordered them. This ensures continuity of care and allows your clinician to make informed decisions about your treatment. In urgent cases, another clinician may become involved in your results or our duty doctor.
