Antibiotics

Why we do not prescribe antibiotics on demand

Antibiotics Only Work Against Bacteria

They do NOT work on viruses like: The common cold , ‘flu , most sore throats especially viral ones ,COVID-19 Bronchitis (often viral) Taking antibiotics for a viral infection won’t help you get better — and it could cause side effects.

Antibiotic Resistance

Overusing or misusing antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. This means bacteria evolve to resist the effects of antibiotics — making infections harder to treat in the future. Antibiotic-resistant infections can lead to longer illnesses, more hospital visits, and even death in severe cases.

Side Effects and Risks

Antibiotics can cause:

nausea, diarrhoea, or allergic reactions Yeast infections (especially in women) disruption of your gut bacteria, which play a role in your immune system and digestion In some cases, antibiotics can trigger serious complications, like: C. difficile infection — a dangerous colon infection caused by disrupted gut flora.
